The city of Brandon, South Dakota has just made trash collection easier for its residents. Soon, the community will allow Dumpsters to be placed on the city’s streets. This means that units will be able to be placed in the streets, although under special circumstances. This decision is the result of a June 15th decision of the City Council.
Currently, these units must be located off the city’s streets; instead, they’re placed in yards or other areas. This made any remodeling or repair projects very difficult. As you’d imagine, this announcement was welcomed by local homeowners, business owners and contractors.
“I was getting calls from people saying we have no place to put a Dumpster, and they didn’t want to put it on their yard,” said Dave Swier, city building inspector. “Our (current) ordinance says ‘you will not park it on the street,’ so we wanted to give peo
ple an option, to say that it was OK to allow them to park it on the street with special permission.”
However, the City Council officials stated that those requesting these Dumpster units would have to follow specific guidelines. “It’s one of those things, where if it’s a special case, I’ll go and look at it and make sure it’s a special case, and then we’ll allow it,” said Swier. “If it’s used once or twice a year, that’s probably all there’s going to be.” He continued, “It’s good not to have Dumpsters in the street. If we let people do that, they’ll leave them forever.”
According to Dennis Olson, the City’s administrator, applicants will probably be approved for three- or five-day Dumpster permits. He stressed that these permits will “probably only renewable due to bad weather, etc.” In addition, permit fees of $25-$30 would be imposed, as well.
