What would you do if you were told that you had to get a radio frequency ID tag for each and every dumpster that you owned as a business owner?Just thinking about that extra added cost dipping into your business’ budget would make anyone’s stomach drop.
Philadelphia city councilor-at-large Bill Green has proposed new regulations of commercial dumpsters within the city to crack down on illegally placed dumpsters in alleyways.
Green’s proposal would require commercial dumpsters to have an affixed radio frequency ID tag that could allow city workers to quickly identify who is responsible for the placement of a dumpster.
The proposed ordinance would also require businesses to have a garbage collection license, which could be revoked as part of enforcement. Green’s proposal would increase fees on illegal dumpsters as well.
Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter in June asked Green to hold off on the legislation until after the three-month summer recess, while the city’s commerce department was attempting to have the proposal knocked down, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.
Green said that he met with Nutter on the proposal and believes that the city council colleagues would have passed the legislation in June had it not been postponed, the Daily News reported.
The city council will again take up the issue when it returns to session in September.
